The climate crisis forces all of us to completely rethink the way we live. The way we move is a big part of this discussion, and it cannot be ignored.
On 16 September, UITP launched a global campaign addressing decision and policy makers, providing a four-step plan to reduce emissions and fight the climate crisis. With the huge support of our members’ community, we aim to ensure that each step of this plan is carefully integrated in every new climate action plan submitted by national governments in 2020. #ONEPLANet

With the newly-relocated COP25 fast approaching (Madrid, Spain, 2-13 December 2019) our climate action is stepping up another gear as the need to discuss the impact of transport on the environment grows…
The transport sector represents 40% of CO2 emissions in our cities. We need cleaner air. Healthier areas. Better lives. So we’re asking the world’s leaders and decision makers, what’s your plan?
And that question leads us nicely in to the fourth and final step of our plan to save the planet…#ONEPLANet
STEP 4: ENSURE CLEAN ENERGY SOURCES ARE ACCESSIBLE TO FURTHER REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT.
Public transport is already a low-emission sector that is nonetheless continually innovating to reduce its carbon footprint. By using clean energy sources, the transport sector leads cities towards a sustainable future.
Governments need to ensure that the space and necessary funding is available to construct renewable energy facilities, or provide financial incentives for companies powering their vehicles with clean energy sources.

That when it comes to clean energy sources and accessibility towards reducing the carbon footprint, a big difference is already being made in the cities around the world that we call home…
UITP has crossed continents (digitally of course!) and looked at Governments, our members, stakeholders and other actors, to gather some impressive examples of what STEP4 in action can – and should – look like.
So where are we heading to first?
In Japan, the rail operator has launched the operation of its first large-scale solar power generation facility on the grounds of the Keiyo Rolling Stock Centre with an output capacity of 1,050kW.
The electricity generated is used at the Centre and will also help to operate trains, reducing CO2 emissions by about 500 tonnes annually and they also started operation of another solar power generation facility on the Joban Line during 2015, enhancing the efficiency of the facility. About 1.6 million kWh of the power generated by solar panels in FY2017 for the operator’s own use.
To see public transport gain from this impressive step in energy use is definitely worth recognising!
Next we head south to Australia, and Brisbane, whereas first reported in 2018, the Council has retrofitted 25,000 streetlights with LEDs, installed 502kW of solar power systems and launching community composting hubs to reduce organic waste going to landfill while at the same time saving tonnes of emissions. It’s great to see a local authority involve their residents in doing their part – reducing individual waste use can benefit your health and the health of the area around you!
Staying in Brisbane, where the city has a fleet of over 1,100 urban route buses, real gains have been made in progressing smart transmission functionality and eco-driving, realising fuel savings of more than 3% and by 10% in 2017. In May 2015 Brisbane’s buses became 100% low floor and wheelchair accessible, thereby encouraging broader patronage and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
In addition, a third of the Council’s fleet is running on CNG and from mid-2018 over 500 buses saw modifications to introduce automated 5 minute idle shutdown and adapted gear selection profiles which better meet terrain conditions all helping to improve vehicle efficiency.
And for our final stop of this STEP4 world tour, we’re heading to the Northern Hemisphere, where in Washington, USA, the state has reported 70% energy efficiency improvements through their lighting upgrades which commenced at the start of 2015, as part of their wider plans to replace 13,500 light fixtures with high-efficiency LED lights through all types of stations and buildings. This is a project worth highlighting and is designed to produce impressive results.
The project is expected to save more than 15 million KWh in energy per year, reducing carbon emissions by over 10,000 tonnes. Furthermore, energy monitoring systems is helping to further improve the efficiency of station through remote monitoring and management.
Big numbers can lead to a big difference! Congratulations to Washington state for this project.
